Buxhall Village Hall Refurbishments

1877

Built in 1877 as a school for children up to the age of 11 years, Buxhall Village Hall served as the village school until its closure circa 1945. From 1945 until 1962 the hall was maintained by East Suffolk County Council and used as a village hall by the local community.

1961

In December 1961 East Suffolk County Council conveyed the closed Buxhall school to the Buxhall Parish Council for the princely sum of £500 and Buxhall Village Hall was established by Trust Deed in August 1962. Buxhall Village Hall was registered as a Charity in June 1964 and the Buxhall Village Hall Management Committee was formed.

1980's to 1991

Over the years small improvements were made to the hall but it became clear in the 1980’s that major improvements and additions were needed to make the hall fit for purpose. This prompted the start of the Buxhall Steam Fair which was held every year to raise funds for the refurbishments. Over the following years, working at weekends and whenever they could spare a moment, a group of local residents undertook a complete renovation and added a modern extension to the hall

1991

In 1991 the refurbishments were finally completed and the new improved Village Hall was officially opened.

2015

Further work has taken place since and the Village Hall Management Committee are most grateful to the students of West Suffolk College who in April 2015 undertook a project which included the installation of new double-glazed windows along with the refurbishment and redecoration of the hall.

2020

LED lighting was fitted throughout the hall during the period of lockdown brought about by the Covid -19 pandemic.

2023

Following ingress of water causing mould to the back extension ceiling the entire extension roof was stripped off, reinsulated and replaced. These works were funded in full by the Buxhall Parish Council. Several other smaller areas of the roof have subsequently been repaired, all funded by the Parish Council.

2023

In 2023 the Village Hall Management Committee secured grants from the Mid Suffolk District Council, funding from the Buxhall Parish Council and Buxhall Community Council to fund the the complete removal and refit of the kitchen.

The wall between the kitchen and bar area was removed and a fully equipped stainless steel kitchen installed. The refit included all new appliances; a range cooker, two fridges and a dishwasher along with additional sinks and a separate hand wash basin. The new kitchen was officially opened in February 2024.

2024

In January 2024 funding was received from Mid Suffolk Councils Living Well in Winter Grant which paid for tables, tablecloths and table top games for use at the monthly Tea Room.

In late 2024 the Village Hall Management Committee applied for further funding from Mid Suffolk District Council to fund a Feasibility Study.  This will help to ascertain the best option for the hall’s refurbishment to provide new toilets, entrance, improved space for events including physical activity opportunities, heating and insulation.

2025

Work is being carried out on the development of the new plans following the Feasibility Study. The Village Hall Management Committee are hosting their first ever Summer Fayre to raise funds for the refurbishment.

The Village Hall Management Committee would like to thank the following for their kind donations towards the ongoing refurbishments:

Buxhall Parish Council

Buxhall Community Council

Mid Suffolk District Council

And the people of Buxhall who help make every fund raising event a success.
